Managing Difficult Conversations (2 days)

This workshop enables participants to engage more effectively in difficult conversations. Sharing one’s own truths in a way that is respectful, without blame, justification, or put down are cornerstone concepts highly effective persons demonstrate.  This workshop emphasizes the importance of assuming value in others, staying engaged and using interactive, high-gain skills to keep difficult conversations on track and moving toward mutual understanding, resolution, and positive commitment.

Program Goal
Enable participants to initiate and conduct effective and accountable conversations with others when the topics are challenging or difficult.

Program Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Address the tendency to avoid difficult conversations
  • Recognize when a difficult conversation is particularly necessary (vs. sending a text or an e-mail)
  • Understand perceptions, assumptions, and prior history and how they influence communication
  • Recall how stress impacts emotions, perception, and responses
  • Thoughtfully plan for a difficult conversation
  • Use reframing, feedback, listening, and questioning skills to communicate effectively in difficult situations
  • Conduct complete and effective difficult conversation that accomplish a win-win (or other reasonable outcome)
