HRG March 2019 Meeting
2019 Employment Law Update – BEWARE the Ides of March!
It’s time once again for the annual legal update, which means that we will hope that someone—anyone—will be brave enough to show up and sit through yet another speed round update on the salient developments in employment and employee benefits law since last we met.
But it’s also (almost) the Ides of March, which means that human resources professionals must Beware!
Beware the topics of Sex, Drugs, and Paid Medical Leave.
The federal and state governments continue to argue about the definition of “sex” under Title VII and the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act—we’ll take a look at the latest developments;
Recreational marijuana is now legal in Michigan—what does that mean for employers and employer drug policies; and
Paid medical leave will be required by the end of the month for Michigan employers with 50 or more employees
Beware the most recent pronouncements of the EEOC, the NLRB and (et tu?) the DOL.
The EEOC has issued its new strategic focus and areas of emphasis;
The NLRB has clarified—helpfully!—it’s definition of “protected, concerted activity”; and
The DOL may be ready to roll out new standards for white collar exemptions - again
Beware the great sedative power of the employee benefits update. Caffeine recommended!
Group health plans have not been affected by new legislation, but we will review a number of “exciting” new regulatory proposals that Michigan employers should know about.
Beware the deep complexity and level of difficulty of the annual quiz!
Forces align against human resources professionals, and risk lurks wherever they look. Will 90 minutes of legal update provide any protection at all? We’ll be honest: probably not. But we will try to make it fun, so that unlike Caesar, you can leave on a high note. (Or at least leave!)
This program will fulfill the SHRM competencies of: Employment Law and Regulations and Risk Management.
This program will also fulfill the HRCI functional areas of Business and Management Strategy and Risk Management because it will assist HR in gaining more knowledge on the legal landscape and developing policies and strategies to limit risk.
